A revelatory exploration of the Jewish roots of the Last Supper that seeks to understand exactly what happened at Jesus’ final Passover. This book shines fresh light on the Last Supper by looking at it through Jewish eyes. Using his in-depth knowledge of the Bible and ancient Judaism, Dr. Brant Pitre answers questions such as: What was the Passover like at the time of Jesus? What were the Jewish hopes for the Messiah? What was Jesus’ purpose in instituting the Eucharist during the feast of Passover? And, most important of all, what did Jesus mean when he said, “This is my body… This is my blood”?

Bishop Larry Silva celebrates All Souls Day in Maui, November 2, 2023October 18, 2023
Dear Sisters and Brothers, Peace be with you! We were all stunned when we found out the extent of the tragic wildfires in Maui on August 8. Even more stunned, however, were those who lost loved ones in the fires and who grieve the untimely passing of their relatives and friends. The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, better known as All Souls Day, is celebrated every year as a reminder of our service to our beloved dead. We offer prayers for them to speed their passage through whatever purgation they may yet need to be able to fully enjoy the eternal vision of God. In a special way, we want to remember our brothers and sisters who perished in the Maui wildfires. I will be celebrating the All Souls Day Mass with the community most effected at Sacred Hearts Church, Kapalua, Maui, on November 2, at 6:00 p.m. There, of course, I will remember those who died in the wildfires. We invite all parishes and communities celebrating Masses on November 2 to pray in a special way for these victims of the wildfires. Enclosed is a poster for each parish, which includes the names of all who have died in the wildfires. I am grateful to Father Alfred Guerrero and his team for producing this remembrance for all our parishes. May the Lord bless you always! Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Larry Silva Bishop of Honolulu Download Bishop Larry Silva's letter. |

Catechetical Sunday, September 17, 2023The word "catechesis" means "to echo." Literally, we are to echo the good news of Jesus Christ to the world. This is not a suggestion; it is a command of our Lord.
Some people are called and set apart in our communities as catechists - those formally trained and charged with passing on the Gospel to children and adults, both inside and outside of our communities. On Catechetical Sunday, we acknowledge them and remind ourselves of the need for formation and growth in all of us. To be a catechist is a privileged calling, and today be sure to say "thank you" to one in your community. However, on this day, it would be wrong to only look to those bearing the title of a catechist for an echoing of good news. Parents are the first and primary catechists in a child's life. Even more, all of us are also important catechists in the lives of our coworkers, our spouses, our relatives, and our friends. We are ALL called to echo and share the Gospel message. Some say catechesis begins in the home; however, it truly begins in the HEART. “Come to me all who labor and are burdened” is the theme for the 2023 Catechetical Sunday observed today. All parishes in the United States will recognize the Ministry of the Word and those who have dedicated themselves to passing on the faith. |

Unpack the Mysteries of Revelation, Bible Study begins Sep. 11, 2023Perhaps no book of the Bible fascinates people more than Revelation. Yet relatively few people have studied it, especially from a Catholic perspective. Revelation: The Kingdom Yet to Come is an intriguing eleven-session study program that shows how the kingdom established by Christ in his Church is intimately connected with the kingdom of heaven. In this study, presenter Jeff Cavins pulls back the veil on the rich symbolism present in Revelation. Discover what the mysterious figures and images of Revelation mean and see how Revelation is more than an apocalyptic vision of the “end times.” Explore the Church’s teaching on the second coming of Christ and the Last Judgment. Understand how God, the Divine Bridegroom, and the Church, his spotless bride, enter into a heavenly, holy, and mystical marriage every time we celebrate Mass.

Worldpriest Annual Global Rosary Relay for the Sanctification of Priests, June 16, 2023Join a world at prayer on June 16, 2023.
The Annual Global Rosary Relay for the Sanctification of Priests will again take place on 16 June 2023, the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This will be its thirteenth year, involving more prayer locations than ever, having grown from 24 single prayer locations in June 2003 its first year to 2,600 in 2020. Each of the participating prayer location countries prays a particular mystery of the Rosary at a specific allocated time on the day in thanksgiving to God for our priests and to implore the protection and loving care of Our Lady, Mother of all priests, for all her priestly sons. With the coming of midnight on 16 June 2023, the entire world will by then have been encircled yet again in prayer on this The Worldpriest Annual Rosary Relay Day. It was the great Irish priest Fr. Patrick Peyton who never tired of saying that: ‘The family that prays together stays together.’ As part of the family of the Church, you are invited to join your prayers to the prayers of millions throughout the world. It is an opportunity for us to raise our hearts to God for all priests in the exercise of their ministry; that they will be blessed, through our prayers, with God’s grace for their priesthood; that in this worldwide community of prayer for them, they may experience our gratitude and support; and finally that they will persevere in unity with Christ and his Church and shepherd the Lord’s flock to the safe pastures of his Kingdom. |

In light of this tradition, Bishop Silva dispenses from the obligation of Lenten Friday abstinence from meat any Catholic living in or visiting the Diocese of Honolulu (State of Hawaii) for that day only. Confirmation-A Sacrament of Initiation for ChristiansThe Sacraments of Initiation – Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist – are the foundation of the Christian life. ~from the United States Catholic Catechism for Adults
Confirmation deepens our baptismal life that calls us to be missionary witnesses of Jesus Christ in our families, neighborhoods, society, and the world. . . . We receive the message of faith in a deeper and more intensive manner with great emphasis given to the person of Jesus Christ, who asked the Father to give the Holy Spirit to the Church for building up the community in loving service. In the Sacrament of Confirmation, the baptized person is "sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit" and is strengthened for service to the Body of Christ. |

Novena to St. John Vianney, July 26 through August 3
What is a novena? It is a series of prayers that are said for 9 straight days, usually as a prayer of petition but sometimes as a prayer of thanksgiving.
On August 4, we will be celebrating the feast day of our patron, Saint John Vianney. Did you know that as a parish, we have been in existence for 60 years? It is not by coincidence that we continue to thrive. It certainly is by grace; the presence of the Lord among us. To obtain this grace, our patron Saint John Vianney continually intercedes for us as well. Wouldn’t it be a good idea to invoke his intercessions as we approach the feast day?
Beginning July 26 until August 3, please pray a short novena prayer that will be helpful as we prepare as individuals, families and the parish community. The Novena will be prayed each day before Mass. If you are unable to join us in person, please pray with us virtually. The prayers will be texted to you each morning in the MyParish App. Mahalo!

We see Jesus as the awaited Messiah who fulfills the promises and prophecies of the Old Testament, establishes the New Law, and inaugurates the kingdom of heaven. Matthew: The King and His Kingdom, a twenty-four-part Bible study, explores how Jesus is challenging and empowering us to a new level of holiness and shows how we must be thoroughly immersed in the kingdom of heaven on earth, the Church, to live it.
