Holy Orders

The Sacrament of Holy Orders
All members of the Church participate in the priesthood of all believers through Baptism. However, some men are called to serve Jesus and the Church today through the celebration of the Sacrament of Holy Orders. Through their leadership in the Church, they help continue Jesus’ presence on earth in the tradition of the apostles.

Deacon Clarence DeCaires retires from diocesan duties

Deacon Clarence DeCaires has served the Diocese of Honolulu for over thirty years with his wife Vi lovingly supporting him all those decades as he served our Catholic community in Hawaii.  In 2020, Dcn. Clarence retired from Diocesan duties, but still is active in our home parish of St. John Vianney Kailua. You will find him serving at Mass, teaching religious education classes, and celebrating baptisms, weddings and funerals.

It takes three people to replace retiring deacon Walter Yoshimitsu

The Hawaii Catholic Herald wrote of his retirement.
Deacon Walter Yoshimitsu Retires: "Graciously tenacious spirit"

SJV's summer seminarians return to studying in CA

These are just two of the Diocese of Honolulu's eleven seminarians who are studying to become priests. Local boy Kurt Meyer spend the summer of 2019 at our parish and Francis Hai Pham, from Middle Vietnam, spent the 2020 summer with us. Both of them are pictured here at St. Patrick's Seminary in Menlo Park, California. Aug. 20, 2020.

Called to be a priest

Before Francis Hai returned to California to continue his second year of theology studies, he sat down with us and shared his story of growing up in Central Vietnam and how he answered God's call to the priesthood. Watch his two videos here.
