Upper Room for Teens
Started in 2017, as a dream of a young man who grew up in St. John Vianney Parish, to offer scriptural reflection and discernment with young persons to equip them to face the world, evangelize it, and live a life of Jesus Christ. Teens, age 14 to 18, meet every Friday night to spend time with friends, share where and how our Living God moves in their lives today, and understand how the Word of God calls them to purpose and action, to be the Body of Christ to their friends, classmates, families, and the larger community.
What we do:
We have fun! We play a game to start our Friday night evening together.
We celebrate each other's milestones; birthdays, graduations, successes.
We eat a lot of Oreos, pizza and cake (and sometimes carrots)!
We pray together; for our needs, the needs of our family and friends, and for the world.
We read the bible scripture for Sunday Mass and talk about what it means and how to live it.
We pick a line from the Sunday scripture readings and put it on the parish roadside bulletin board each week.
We make gift bags and distribute them to the homeless at Waimanalo Beach.
We support life at all stages and march at the Right to Life rally at the State Capitol.
We visit the imprisoned and host games and activities for the children who visit their moms at the Annual Star Light, Star Bright and Sun Light, Sun Bright events at the Women's Community Correctional Center.
We lead an hour of Eucharistic Adoration with the parish community in the church.
We lead the Stations of the Cross prayer during Lent with the parish community in the church.
We meet other teens living in the Windward Vicariate and join them in activities, like at the Youth Praise and Worship Night.
We go on retreats together. Some of us direct, lead and give testimony to our life of Christ.
We participate in the Mass as lectors, musicians and cantors.
We support each other as fellow teenage Catholic Christians.
We love God and share that joy each week with each other and the world.
